A Nutritionist Weighs in...

The Supermarket Diet is a good diet to follow, since it is well balanced and does not impose any extreme restrictions. It encourages healthy food, but also allows for the occasional indulgence. You may find yourself constantly looking up recipes or referring to lists for possible meal choices; but on the flip side, this saves you the time and energy involved in creating your own calorie-controlled meal plans.

If you like the supermarket, this could be a long-term plan for you

If you hate to cook and have no interest in learning to love it, then you will not be able to follow this plan. It may be hard if you are constantly pressed for time or if you eat out often. Otherwise, it's reasonable and not extreme in the least.

Since you are allowed to eat normal food, your family can join in on the fun, but they won't have to watch their portion sizes. Traveling could be tricky since the plan calls for cooking at home. In this case, you would have to consistently choose foods like steamed veggies and grilled chicken or fish.

  • Must watch portion sizes
  • Avoidance of junk food
