A Nutritionist Weighs in...

It would be difficult to maintain this diet as a lifelong plan-you're going to cave to that chocolate craving at some point. However, many of the recipes are appealing and contain many nutritious foods. I would recommend using the recipes to compliment an overall healthy lifestyle of eating and physical activity.

You can toss the Twinkies in the garbage, but can you say goodbye to bagels forever?

The first step of the diet is to throw away all refined items from your dry storage, refrigerator, and freezer and then go out and buy all new products that they list. This can be extremely costly, and even difficult if you start in the winter when fresh produce is out of season. If you're part of a family with children, it is unlikely that you will be able to get your children to agree to all the foods, since all foods in the home can only be from the list.

Some great recipes are provided, but the portion sizes are extremely limited (and this is coming from a dietitian who practices and preaches portion control!). In addition, many of the menus suggested include several of these recipes per day. This means that you will spend much of your day preparing the meals-do you have the time to do this?

Diet Pros Diet Cons
  • Includes nutrient-rich foods
  • No calorie counting-uses visual plate and bowl comparisons for portions
  • Some new fruits and veggies on the allowed list which may be adventurous to try
  • Promotes antioxidant-rich foods, which helps protect against different diseases.
  • Unlimited tea, coffee, and water
  • Wine is permitted (in moderation)
  • Expects you to go "cold turkey" to eliminate sugar cravings
  • Recommends extremely small portions
  • Generalizes for both sexes and body types (minimal differences recommended between men and women)-this may leave men especially unsatisfied and hungry
  • Physical activity not recommended
  • "Acceptable" fruits and veggies are readily available and reasonably priced only during summer months in most parts of the country-could be costly
