A Nutritionist Weighs in...

The philosophy of the French with regards to what and how to eat sounds interesting and is probably a great way to live. After all, who wouldn't like two-hour lunches and five weeks' paid vacation each year? Other great recommendations include eliminating processed foods from your diet, taking longer mealtimes to really enjoy your food, and becoming more of a "sensual eater."

The reality, however, is that this plan could be nearly impossible to follow for many people, especially those with busy lifestyles. Overall, this is a nicely laid out plan that is nutritionally sound, but unfortunately for many Americans, it is simply not realistic.

If you like to cook, you could live like a French person

Preparing and eating "real" food and taking the time to enjoy it takes? time. If you are constantly on the go and simply cannot take 20 minutes to sit down and enjoy your meals and make time to relax after meals, this plan may not be right for you. It also requires a lot of label reading to look for the banned ingredients and would also require frequent trips to the store to keep "real" food on hand. If you are not willing or able to make the time, then this plan would not work for you. On the other hand, if you like to cook and are adventurous about your foods, this could be a healthy lifestyle - although it's not a plan to lose weight fast.

Diet Pros Diet Cons
  • No calorie counting
  • Can eat rich foods
  • Encourages activities you enjoy as exercise
  • No radical restriction of food groups
  • Eliminates foods you probably should be avoiding anyway
  • Can be challenging to avoid all processed foods
  • Requires a lifestyle change
  • Must watch portion sizes
  • Eating companions may not be able to relax after meals or extend mealtimes
  • Requires frequent trips to the grocery store to keep "real" food on hand
  • May be difficult for those who have very busy and time-constrained lifestyles
