A Nutritionist Weighs in...

If you look beyond the psychobabble, you can see the solid foundation of this diet. It encourages you to focus on eating what's nutritious and keep less nutritious foods to a minimum. The plan's seven keys can help you get to the underlying causes of your overeating and force you to get real and face your problems. If your food and weight issues need to be explored, this may be the diet for you, especially if you can work patiently toward long-term changes. If you are looking to shed a few pounds for a special outfit or occasion, you will find this plan unhelpful.

Change your mind and you can change your body, but a new body won't solve all your problems

Even with the guidance and help the diet provides, Dr. Phil reminds you that becoming thin doesn't make up for whatever else may be wrong in your life. Just changing your body doesn't mean that you've addressed all your issues. But you will be healthier and fitter.

Can you make it through all seven steps on Dr. Phil's plan? If you can get past all of the psych talk and quiz-taking, the actual diet is not terribly challenging. Basically, you watch portion sizes by filling up your plate with foods that have a high nutrient value like fruits, vegetables, proteins, and whole grains.

Sorry, junk food lovers, your plate will be full before you can add most fast foods or candy. You don't have to skip your favorites entirely, just severely limit foods such as fast food, doughnuts, and chocolate bars. No surprises there, since we all know that those really aren't the best nutritional choices for the long run.

Diet Pros Diet Cons
  • No calorie counting - uses plate imagery to guide food choices
  • No elimination of food groups
  • Encourages activities you enjoy as exercise
  • Addresses psychological issues that may affect your eating behavior
  • Does not require preparation of numerous recipes
  • Practical for dieters with families and those who travel
  • Largely based on underlying psychological issues - may not be right for everyone
  • Must refer to lists of foods you can and cannot eat
  • Requires meal planning and watching portion sizes
  • Requires several supplements
  • The tough love approach can knock down your self-esteem
